The high road over the Făgăraș Mountains and Lake Bâlea, usually open in summer and early autumn. Fare on request.
The Transfăgărășan is a mountain road, not a town. The usual chauffeur day from Bucharest climbs the south side toward Bâlea Lake and turns back, unless you continue north toward Sibiu. About 230 km and about four hours gets you to the start of the serious climbing in ordinary traffic. The hairpins above that are slower, and they depend on whether the road authority has the high section open. That window is often July to October, but the exact dates change every year with weather and works. Do not book the high road on the assumption that a calendar month is enough. We confirm the road status before the day. Curtea de Argeș is the sensible stop on the way south. A same-day return is long. There is no published fare, and no ticket price for the road because the drive itself is the point. TODO: sezon oficial. This page is about the road, not a resort timetable. The south side from Curtea de Argeș is the usual chauffeur day out of Bucharest. The north side toward Sibiu is a different day unless you cross and stay. The high section opens and closes by decision of the road authority, often inside July to October, not by a date we print as a promise. We check before we confirm. If the top is shut, the day can still be the monastery in Curtea de Argeș and the valley, and you should say whether that is acceptable. Bâlea is not a restaurant reservation we make. There is no fare on the page. A same-day return is long even when the road is clear, because the hairpins are slow.
